What are Etizolam powder and its uses?

Etizolam Powder

What is Etizolam?

Etizolam is a benzodiazepine analogue belonging to a class of medications called Theniodiazepines. Apart from its prominent anxiolytic properties, it is also used as a sedative, anti-convulsant and musculoskeletal relaxant. It is commonly used for treating anxiety and insomnia. However, it has also shown better results in treating depression than other benzodiazepines. Etizolam comes in strengths from 0.25mg- 2md and is available in tablets, pellets, blotting paper and powder.

What is Etizolam Powder?

The intoxicating properties and growing history of addiction and misuse have led to Etizolam being declared a controlled substance. This has regulated its supply in pharmacies and medical counters. Etizolam powder is the version of the medication available for medical research and accessible only for said purposes. It is generally white and is pressed into capsules for use. In some medical emergencies, when the patient cannot swallow the tablet, powdered Etizolam is nasally ingested as per the medical practitioner’s advice. Any other form of powder use is considered strictly illegal and liable to penalisation or imprisonment.

Composition and Mechanism of Action

Etizolam powder consists of 99.8% pure Etizolam in UK. It is an odourless crystalline substance that is insoluble in water but partially soluble in ethanol solution. Meanwhile, it is completely soluble in chloroform and methanol solution.

It primarily consists of metabolites alpha-hydroxyetizolam and 8-hydroxyetizolam, of which the former is active and has a half-life of almost 8 hours. The powdered Etizolam dose is usually advised to be no more than 1mg per dose. It works by acting on the Benzodiazepine site of the brain’s GABA receptors to produce calming effects on the person’s mind.

Is it safe?

The powdered form of Etizolam is preferred by some generic companies due to its cheap manufacturing cost, resulting in its easy availability. The powdered form of the medication can be easily administered to patients who have trouble swallowing or have gastronomical issues. It even has a longer shelf life than its tablet versions and allowing practitioners to prescribe it more flexibly to patients.

Unfortunately, it’s very advantages go against its favour while misusing the drug. Powdered Etizolam’s illegal use has increased due to its easy manufacturing and increased demand in the market. A flexible dosage may lead to excess intake of the drug either non-intentionally or intentionally, leading to an overdose.

Sometimes powdered medication is administered nasally to patients through a process called insufflation. It is applied in cases where oral ingestion is out of question and consumption of the medicine is vital for the person. This procedure is misused as some people use the powdered form of Etizolam for euphoria or recreational activities. Etizolam abuse can potentially damage the cartilage and nasal cavity and accumulate the drug in the blood.

Statistics:

The NFLIS (National Forensic Laboratory Information System) has reported increasing cases of Etizolam abuse over the past few years. Initially, three cases were reported in 2012, which skyrocketed to 600 in 2016, 950 in 2017 and 1570 in 2018. After undergoing several reviewing processes, the ECDD (Expert Committee on Drug Dependence) of WHO decided to keep Etizolam under surveillance in 2017. The number of deaths related to Etizolam has significantly increased from 223 in 2016 to almost 548 in 2018. Etizolam has been declared the cause for the highest number of drug-related deaths in 2018, nearly 548 of 675 deaths, scaling the percentage up to 80%.

Complications:

Etizolam powder misuse does not just cause side effects. Overdosing can cause severe symptoms like slurred speech, sedation, loss of consciousness and even respiratory depression, leading to a comatose state. Pregnant patients are not recommended to use it as it could affect the fetus or even damage it. Withdrawal symptoms of the medication include increased intensity of insomnia, anxiety, seizures and even death. Researchers have even expressed concern about the drug’s sedative effects, making it a potential choice for date rape.

Conclusion:

Before you buy Etizolam powder, it is better to consult with a doctor to be sure of its requirement for your present medical condition. Otherwise, you may cross the thin line between legal and illegal use of this drug for sure.
